Graemor - Leaders in Business Growth

If you thought accountants were dull, boring number crunchers, focussed solely on income, expenses, financial statements and tax returns, more often than not you’d be right. But KwaZulu-Natal based Graemor is not your ‘typical’ accounting firm, they’re so much more. With branches in Howick, Pietermaritzburg and Durban, this firm of professional lifestyle accountants offers an innovative, dynamic and diverse range of essential business products and services; from accounting and tax to business coaching. The Graemor slogan ‘Leaders in Business Growth’ is apt in that the Graemor team not only focuses on the day to day accounting needs of a business but also places huge emphasis on the development, long-term growth and sustainability of a business, its staff, management and ownership.

CEO Yvonne Reece is an inspirational businesswoman; extremely motivated, focused and service-driven. Her attitude to life and business filters throughout the entire organization delivering to clients the elements required for the successful functioning of their businesses. As a young woman some 20 years ago, Yvonne Reese purchased the then start-up accounting business, and has spearheaded the organization to new heights since. Last month saw Graemor celebrate their 40th year in operation heralding in an opportunity for the Graemor brand to ‘rethink, rework and revive’… that’s where iKind comes in.

iKind Media was tasked with a complete Graemor rebrand; from logo design to printed stationery, electronic documentation, signage and vehicle branding, to the design and development of a new HTML5 responsive website and the production of a long-form commercial. For the purpose of this post though, we’ll be highlighting the long-form commercial which tells the inspirational story of a humble carpenter and his personal journey; touching on the challenges, hardships and rewards of establishing and running a small business.

To play the role of the carpenter, we turned to long-time friend Paul Figuera; a passionate, dedicated and extremely talented Durban-based carpenter who slipped into the role with ease. Have a look at Paul’s website here (www.wooder.co.za) for an insight into his craft. The balance of the acting ensemble included up and coming actor and filmmaker, Derek de Froberville, who turned out a crucial performance as a devious business partner, iKind Group Accounting Manager Levonne Nefdt who brought her acting talents to the fore in playing the role of the Carpenter’s loving and supportive wife and Yvonne Reece playing herself as the Graemor Business Advisor, showing that her skills reach far beyond the realms of the boardroom table!

Screened at the Graemor 40th birthday celebration held at the Protea Hilton Hotel last month, the commercial was a resounding success, sending home the message that with Graemor on your team, your business and personal goals can be achieved. Watch the video above and visit the new Graemor website for more information.

Xavier Vahed launches 'Tradition' Exhibition

Xavier Vahed is fast becoming one of Durban’s most prominent and sought-after photographers. When he’s not shooting gorgeous portraits, lecturing in the community or roaming the streets ‘photojournalist-style’, Xavier is honing his phenominal skills as a creative artist who’s work displays a fresh, unique approach not seen too often in the world of modern commercial photography. His latest project entitled ‘Tradition’ was launched last week at Kloof’s best kept secret, the Fat Tuesday Gallery.

Patrons at the well attended exhibition launch were treated to a feast of gigantic colour prints as well as a thought provoking short film produced in collaboration with iKind Media. Here’s what Xavier had to say about ‘Tradition’:

“Over the last few months, I have been thinking a great deal about weddings and the traditions that surround them. I have photographed weddings from all over the cultural spectrum; ranging from the conventional to the more adventurous. During the process I began to think about the often strange traditions which have become integral to the wedding process and in so doing, gradually invented some traditions of my own. I started to imagine a culture in which it is customary for a couple to braid their hair together on their wedding day - literally binding themselves together. The exhibition is essentially a photographic story set in the late 1960’s; capturing an ordinary weekend in the lives of a couple in their early 50’s. Although they are physically bound together, over the years they have become emotionally detached. The series aims to capture this disconnect, often using the braid itself as the dividing line between the husband and wife.”

This is the second collaboration between Xavier Vahed and iKind Media; the first being a commercial for the 2011 Trollbeads Africa Collection launch.

New Donald Music Video Features Exotic Durban Locations

Donald
‘Over The Moon’

Donald Moatshe may be relatively new to the music industry, but his success is taking off in a way others only dream of. This goes without saying, considering the young man’s clean-cut image and undeniable talent.

His most recent music video for the track ‘Over The Moon’, has catapulted Donald’s fresh success to a whole new level. Following on from his previous videos for the tracks ‘Denial’ and ‘I Deserve’, ‘Over The Moon’ lyrically completes a fiery love story that forms the basis of his well-received debut album, ‘Train Of Love.

This latest offering sees the artist in a variety of dreamlike landscapes searching for his one true love who seems to be just out of reach. What might just steal the show from Donald himself though are the stunning locations used throughout the storyline, which was filmed in its entirety in greater Durban, South Africa.

Legendary Johannesburg-based music video producer Bruce Patterson of Pilot Films brought the artist to Durban for a rugged three day shoot encompassing an array of intense shooting environments. Jolyon Ellis and Janine King of Outland Films directed the music video and iKind Media assisted with DOP Devin Carter heading up our tough and tech-savvy production crew.

With almost 100,000 hits on youtube and a massive amount of airplay on MTV Base, the ‘Over The Moon’ music video will help to ensure that Donald becomes South Africa’s next big star!

My Roommate Is A Tokoloshe!

After some 2 years of being stored in the iKind vault, we thought now was a good time to officially release one of our earlier productions… ‘My Roommate is a Tokoloshe’ is a light-hearted, deliciously South African comedy from the mind of iKind Producer and D.O.P Devin Carter.

It tells the tale of Dirk, a typical South African white male who’s life is toppled completely upside down when he accidentally hits a Sangoma with his car whilst driving home from a party. The Sangoma (The Zulu name for a traditional healer or witchdoctor) curses Dirk with a Tokoloshe - an evil spirit from South African folklore. However, the Tokoloshe is far from the traditional version of the legend, as he proceeds to make himself an unwanted guest in Dirk’s house, with hilarious consequences.

This short film was written, produced and edited on a shoestring budget and was completed towards the end of 2010.

SAIH rolls out 'Africa For Norway' Radi-Aid campaign

Africa For Norway - Radi-aid
“DONATE YOUR RADIATOR!”

The Norwegian Students’ and Academics’ International Assistance Fund, or ‘SAIH, has long been a supporter and funder of projects in less advantaged countries across the globe. Operating inline with the motto “Education for Liberation”, one of the primary aims of the organisation is the adjustment or re-development of the often narrow-minded European view towards developing countries. 2012 marks SAIH’s 50th anniversary and to celebrate the jubilee, whilst also bringing attention to the organization, they came up with a crazy concept - ‘Africa for Norway’.

Africa for Norway is a ‘fictitious’ non-profit organization which encourages Africans to raise money and collect radiators for donation to freezing cold, suffering Norwegians. Of course, being a first world country, not a lot of Norwegian people are actually freezing, but SAIH wanted to subtly remind people of just how easy it is for Europeans to play on typical African stereotypes; the same way many European charitiy videos do when it comes to portraying poverty and disease as a rampant standard in Africa.

Africa For Norway’s inaugural ‘fake’ project was to record a song and shoot a music video entitled “Radi-aid, which would appear to bring together African celebrities and musicians in a grand choral masterpiece, inspiring the African continent to stand together for the plight of the poor, cold Norwegians by donating their old and unused radiators. The music video aimed to parody eighties Band Aid videos such as ‘Do They Even Know it’s Christmas; highlighting Western media’s often grossly biased perspective in its portrayal of Africa.

Imagine if every person in Africa saw the “Africa for Norway” video and this was the only information they ever got about Norway. What would they think about Norway?

SAIH approached iKind Media, based in Durban, South Africa, to handle both the music recording and music video production right here at the South-East end of the African continent. Needless to say, a fantastic time was had by all with a great team of local creatives breathing life into this thought-provoking concept.

Fundamental to the principals of the project was the deep necessity to have community involvement throughout the entire performance process. Some years ago, SAIH aided the development of KCAP - KwaMashu Community Advancement Projects - a performing arts school situated at the Ekhaya Multi Arts Centre in Durban’s KwaMashu township. The purpose of the school was to provide disadvantaged youth with an oppurtunity to learn a variety of integrated arts and creative disciplines. Lead by the passionate and enigmatic Edmund Mhlongo, the students of this creative hub filled the bulk of the acting and singing roles, showcasing their many talents to the world. For more info on KCAP, visit their website - www.kcap.co.za

SAIH has also launched a website to compliment the music video, check it out at www.africafornorway.com
