Interpret Durban 2012

INTERPRET DURBAN
Exhibition • Awards Party • Muso Mix Comp
Bat Centre • 29 September 2012

Now in its 3rd year, INTERPRET DURBAN is a platform for Durbanites to celebrate Durban; by Durban and for Durban.

2010 Marked the first year of INTERPRET DURBAN, an event inspired by our city and its people. 3 Years later, the event has grown from being an independent creation to becoming a public celebration supported by civic and private groups. Regardless of this success, the aim of INTERPRET DURBAN remains true to its original intentions: to showcase the city of Durban and its people.

Each INTERPRET DURBAN event takes a concentrated approach to shining a spotlight on Durban and her citizens. The unique venues, artists, live music, décor and every other aspect of the night carefully bring together and show off the best this city has to offer.

From Colombo, the metropolis’s oldest coffee roastery, to the splendid grandeur of our 102 year-old City Hall; each venue is selected to serve as a symbol and a reminder of what Durban was in contrast to the city it is now, and what it is transforming into. This message is fuelled by the music and various creative works on display on the night - each artwork and live performance produced and presented by talented Durbanites.

iKind Media is a proud sponsor of the 2012 INTERPRET DURBAN MUSO MIX COMP, where the winning artist will walk away with a professional photo shoot as well as a world-class iKind Studio-produced music video; to be shot and edited in its entirety right here in Durban.

The Living Beehive at COP17

COP17
SOUTH AFRICA CLIMATE CHANGE RESPONSE EXPO
Durban, South Africa
28 November - 9 December 2011

The Living Beehive - Construction Phase 1Since the first United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) entered into force in 1995, the Conference of the Parties (COP) have been meeting annually to assess progress in dealing with climate change on a global level. Now in its 17th edition, the gathering of the parties to the Kyoto Protocol kicks off Monday 28 November in sunny Durban, South Africa… and the city is buzzing with activity and excitement!

Amidst the hustle and bustle of COP17, the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) will host the South Africa Climate Change Response Expo (CCREXPO); a public platform for understanding and debating issues relating to climate change. The Expo provides an opportunity for green economy players to profile their work and products and to signal government’s commitment to encouraging a green economy growth path. It’s main objective will be to create a visitor experience that provides opportunities for the public to make a personal connection with issues of climate change; and to excite and inspire South Africans to make climate-friendly choices.

One of the most stimulating exhibitions at this year’s Expo is “The Living Beehive”, an innovative project based at the Durban Botanic Gardens involving the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), eThekwini Municipality and the Durban Botanic Gardens Trust.

The Living Beehive” is a soon to be completed self-sustaining ecosystem in the shape of a traditional Zulu beehive hut. The structure will comprise stylized ‘living walls’ ie. the steel and concrete framework will be carpeted inside and out with a spectacular array of local foliage. A steel walkway will enable visitors to move through the natural interior and to embrace the seamless integration of infrastructure and environment. “The Living Beehive” will open discussion on how healthy ecosystems can enable society to cope with the impacts of climate change.

As a part of our own green initiative, iKind Media has been involved in documenting the progress of The Living Beehive” construction for non-profit organization, STEPS. Based in Cape Town, with projects throughout Southern Africa, STEPS aims to facilitate the production of documentaries which ignite discussion around local and global issues. Phase 1 documentary of the “The Living Beehive” construction was released earlier this week and can be seen above.

With COP17 now just hours away, many hands are frantically working on ‘greening’ the infrastructure; the process of completely covering walls and surrounding areas with plant life. We’re continuing to document the transformation and will soon be releasing another video illustrating this intriguing second phase… click the thumbnails below to view a few photos. Be sure to get down to the Durban Botanic Gardens and watch this space!

iKind Studio opens up Durban TV commercial landscape

iKind Studio - Durban - South Africa

YOUR IDEA. OUR IMAGINATION.

After just a few months in the new Durban HQ, the iKind ‘creative hub’ is buzzing.

The official ‘launch’ of the brand new iKIND Studio took place earlier this month and the new facility has been welcomed into iKind’s expanding range of production services. iKind Studio aims to compliment the production and post-production team’s photographic, film, music video and TV commercial capabilities.

The studio is equipped with high spec photographic equipment for glamour, portrait and product photography as well as a state of the art green screen rig which opens up a world of possibilities for Durban advertising, film, music and TV productions.

If you’ve seen the recently flighted iTruck television commercial (click here if you haven’t), the majority of which was filmed in the iKind Studio, you will understand the importance of this latest addition to the Durban television, music and film industries.

Catlike Thieves release new music video

CATLIKE THIEVES - “KISSES AND CANE”

Catlike Thieves - Kisses and CaneNine months after their first music video ‘Maybe Baby’ took to the MK charts by storm, Durban band Catlike Thieves have now released their second. This vibrant and tantalizing visual feast was created for their sexy new single ‘Kisses and Cane and was shot, edited and produced once again by the same industrious crew as the first!

The ‘Kisses and Cane’ music video has just launched on South African music video TV channel, MK, and can now be seen by eyeballs all over the world thanks to the “magic of the internet”.

Since the success of ‘Maybe Baby’, the band has been frantic with an extensive schedule including touring the length and breadth of South Africa and reaching the finals of the KFC Sessions in August.

The second collaboration between these light hearted rockers and iKind Media will certainly not be the last. Talk of a third music video is already in progress, so watch out for these guys in the near future!
