Original Material Awards Best Music Video for Niche Fam

CONVERSE ORIGINAL MATERIAL AWARDS 2011
The Playhouse, Durban

The creme of local hip hop culture was out in force at the prestigious Converse Original Material Awards staged at The Playhouse theatre in Durban at the close of 2011.

OMAZ, brain-child of Ayanda Makukule and Mduduzi Duma aka DJ Lab of Gagasi FM, was launched in 2009 as a platform to encourage, recognise and honour local hip hop artists.

Categories included in the 2011 awards were Best Mix Tape; Best EP, Album Of The Year, Single Of The Year, Best Dance Crew, Best Music Video, DJ Of The Year, Best Newcomer, Producer Of The Year, Rap Crew Of The Year and Emcee Of The Year to mention a few.

Kasi rapper Zakwe took the award for Single Of The Year for Bathi Ngiyachoma (…check out the music video here - an iKind Media post-production project), while Flowsik was named the Best Lyricist Of The Year. Dance Crew Of The Year went to Rebels and Niche Fam scooped the coveted Best Music Video award for their single Pretty Girl (…check out the iKind Media produced music video here). Level Underground Squad (LUS) took home the Album Of The Year Award.

Live entertainment on the night featured performances from some of Durban’s most talented artists including Judas, whose energy dictated the tempo of the show, Mhlathi, who left the crowd begging for more with his single Krump vs House and female MC SkyWanda who performed alongside Apple. Abdus, Hydro, Flowsik and newcomer MG also delivered great performances. The dance crews stepped up with phenomenal performances from Warrior Knights, who incorporated traditional dance moves into their choreography, and Floor Assassins, who awed the audience with their artistic display of flexibility and movement. Makukule delivered a breathtaking finale with MC SkyWanda that brought the audience to a standing ovation.

While the Original Material Awards originated in KwaZulu-Natal, Ayanda Makukule and Mduduzi Duma plan to expose talent from across South Africa in a bid to crown OMAZThe Hip Hop Event of the Year”.

New Zakwe music video featuring Danger and Zuluboy

ZAKWE
iTsotsi By Nature

Zakwe - Bathi NgiyachomaThe new Zakwe album entitled “Kubhodloka isfuba setsotsi” featuring the hit track ‘Bathi Nguyachoma with Danger and Zuluboy has officially hit the streets. The 18 track album includes contributions from numerous artists including SAMA-winning rapper and producer Amu, Ishove, Dome, Kay Master, Esphi and Ngame as well as collaborations with DJ Tira and Big Nuz, Zuluboy and Danger, and The Soil and Vuyo Tyolo.

Born in the Durban township of KwaMashu, the 23 year-old Ntokozo Zakwe first discovered rapping and hip hop when he was in school. Although his parents weren’t too happy about his love for hip hop he pursued his passion when in matric at Brettonwood High School.

“In matric, rapping was intense. We used to want to go to shows where there were rappers just so we could be there and see what it’s like being on stage. My parents didn’t like that one bit. They were worried about my marks, seeing that it was my last year and a most crucial one,” says Zakwe.

Zakwe began rapping at the Bat Centre in Durban where he was able too find his feet in the game. On completion of his studies, Zakwe released his first mix tape entitled “Street Music” which made a huge impact on the underground scene with two of his tracks making it onto the Hype Sessions where he received massive airplay.

But it was Zakwe’s idol, Zuluboy, who gave him the opportunity to dream big. Zuluboy featured Zakwe on his album, iGoda, earning him his stripes and a record deal from Native Rhythms and Sony Music Africa.

“Zuluboy was that one person I dreamed of working with. When he offered me a verse on his album, he made my dreams come true - he really did.”

Check out the new music video for Zakwe’s hit track ‘Bathi Ngiyachoma’ featuring Danger and Zuluboy; an iKind Media post production project.

One thing’s for sure, with his hard work attitude and the professional team behind him, this Kasi rapper is on the move.
